No, John Snow, winter isn’t coming, winter is well and truly here! I’ve teamed up with NEXT Men to help you fight against the cold and layer like a pro…
Goodbye flamingo shirts and fluorescent shorts. Hello, crew neck sweaters and tailored coats.
Yes, as temperatures start to drop and our snooze alarms become our best friends, a serious question comes to mind. Is it socially acceptable to wrap myself in my duvet and leave the house looking like a Chinese hotdog?!
Although this may sound amazing, it’s probably not the wisest or stylish idea. So, we have to settle for the next best thing! Layers, Layers and more Layers!
The trick of the trade
Now, when it comes to layering your outfits it’s not as easy as you may think. Sure, you can quickly throw on a vest, shirt, sweater, blazer, coat, and be on your way.
But! All of a sudden, that morning cold you felt has disappeared and you’re stuck with that line of sweat slowly trickling down your back all the way into your *you know what* #SweatyAss.
Leaving you feeling unstylish, uncomfortable and with a scent of someone, you wouldn’t want to stand next to.
So, with this in mind, here are 3-tips to help you avoid these simple mistakes and layer like a pro this autumn winter.
A blank canvas
Like all great art, it starts with a blank canvas. In this case, your blank canvas is the first layer of your outfit.
Whether you’re going for a more casual or formal look, your first layer ALWAYS needs to be something lightweight and breathable.
For a more casual look, I’d recommend a simple white t-shirt. Purchase it in a size up to guarantee a more breathable fit. If you’re going for a more formal feel, a light-weight oxford shirt, similar to this one I’m wearing from NEXT is perfect.

The signature layer
This signature piece will normally be a sweater, hoodie or cardigan. But, when you take off your outer layer (i.e blazer or coat), you want to make sure your outfit still looks just as stylish with and without the added layer.
Again, don’t go too thick with the knitwear, keep it clean, fresh and cozy. This Tan turtleneck sweater is from Next, and I love how the stripes add a bit more charisma to the outfit.

The last piece of the puzzle
Last but certainly not least, the outwear layer. This could be anything from a wool coat to structured bomber jacket depending on what vibe you’re going for.
I’ve gone for a navy coat from Next, which is a perfect piece to smarten up any outfit. Plus, we can all do with a navy wool coat in wardrobe throughout winter.
